چکیده

The bright short-hard GRB 051103 was triangulated by the Inter-Planetary Network and found to occur in the direction of the nearby M81/M82 galaxy group. Given its possible local-universe nature, we searched for an afterglow associated with this burst. We observed the entire 3 error quadrilateral using the Palomar 60 inch robotic telescope and the Very Large Array (VLA) about 3 days after the burst. We used the optical and radio observations to constrain the flux of any afterglow related to this burst and to show that this burst is not associated with a typical supernova out to z 0:15. Our optical and radio observations, along with the Konus/Wind gamma-ray energy and light curve, are consistent with this burst being a giant flare of a soft gamma-ray repeater (SGR) within the M81 galaxy group. Furthermore, we find a star-forming region associated with M81 within the error quadrilateral of this burst, which supports the SGR hypothesis. If confirmed, this will be the first case of a soft gamma-ray repeater outside the Local Group. Subject headinggs: gamma rays: bursts — galaxies: individual (M81, M82) — stars: neutron

On the Possibility of Identification of a Short/Hard Burst GRB 051103 with the Giant Flare from a Soft Gamma Repeater in the M81 Group of Galaxies

The light curve, energy characteristics, and localization of a short/hard GRB 051103 burst are considered. Evidence in favor of identifying this event with a giant flare from a soft gamma repeater in the nearby M81 group of interacting galaxies is discussed. Subject headings: Gamma repeaters, giant flares, galaxies

Grb 060121: Implications of a Short/intermediate Duration Γ-ray Burst at High Redshift

Since the discovery of the first short-hard γ-ray burst afterglows in 2005, the handful of observed events have been found to be embedded in nearby (z < 1), bright underlying galaxies. We present multiwavelength observations of the short-duration burst GRB 060121, which is the first observed to clearly outshine its host galaxy (by a factor > 10). A photometric redshift for this event places the...

A COMPACT BINARY MERGER MODEL FOR THE SHORT, HARD GRB 050509b

The first X–ray afterglow for a short (∼ 30 ms), hard γ–ray burst was detected by Swift on 9 May 2005 (GRB 050509b). No optical or radio counterpart was identified in follow–up observations. The tentative association of the GRB with a nearby giant elliptical galaxy at redshift z = 0.2248 would imply a total energy release Eγ,iso ≈ 3×1048 erg, and that the progenitor had traveled several tens of...

The Faint Afterglow and Host Galaxy of the Short - Hard Grb 060121

We present optical and X-ray observations of the afterglow and host galaxy of the short-hard GRB 060121. The faint R-band afterglow is seen to decline as t while the X-ray falls as t, indicating the presence of the cooling break between the two frequencies. However, the R-band afterglow is very faint compared to the predicted extrapolation of the X-ray afterglow to the optical regime (specifica...

The Possible Indications of Low-Frequency Gravitational Waves Associated with a Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 051103 in LIGO pre-S5 Data

The noise sources of gravitational wave detectors for ground-based laser interferometers by example of LIGO were analyzed. As shown the low-frequency gravitational waves (GW) cause to changes in the detectors’ dynamic properties, which manifested as the Q-factor’s changes of lowfrequency seismic component in a detectors’ integral noise that leads to the possibility of indirect GW’s observation ...
